Tēnā koutou katoa. Whare Kai is a social supermarket that we operate in Whangārei with the support of Food Stuffs North Island where whānau in need of kai can select what they need rather than receiving pre-filled food parcels.

Bookings for a shop are made through our 155 Whare Āwhina team, who will assist you with wraparound help and support.
We can help you apply to Work and Income for a food grant and ensure you are receiving the support you are entitled to.
Drop in to 155 Open Arms on Robert St and have a korero with our team. It's open Monday to Saturday between 8.30am and 1pm.
At 155 Open Arms we also provide FREE meals Monday to Saturday:
Breakfast is available between 8.30am and 10am
Lunch is available between 11.30am and 12.30pm
Shopping at 155 Whare Kai
We want you to have a warm, inviting and comfortable experience.
Upon entry, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our Kaimahi who will walk you through the supermarket.
You will receive points based on the size of your household that you can spend on any items within the supermarket. These points replace money and everything in the supermarket has points allocated.
You’ll receive a trolley with a calculator so you can tally up as you shop.
At the end of your shop you will go to the counter and our Kaimahi will check you out and bag your kai.

Ministry of Social Development (MSD WINZ)
If you are on a low income, or a benefit and in urgent need of kai, MSD may be able to help you with a one-off payment for food.
You can apply through MyMSD if you have a login, or you can call 0800 88 99 00.
Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm
Saturdays 8am to 1pm
If you have been declined food support from MSD you can ask for a review of decision. Just state what decision you disagree with and why and what you think should have happened.
